Abstract

Three sections of the Quaternary outcrops sediments have been investigated on the cliffs of Tigris river. It is found that the Quaternary deposits are mostly of immature nature which formed a mixture of gravel, sand and mud with thickness 25-35meter.

Shape analysis of the gravels showing that common percentage of bladed, very bladed and compact bladed. The long axis orientation of the gravels showing a direction of paleocurrents NNW-WSW.

Mineralogically, the sedimentary gravels forming 75%, metamorphic gravels (18%) and igneous gravels (7%).

The sedimentary structures are mostly primary such as cross bedding, lamination, imbrication and planer and horizontal stratification, in addition to predeposition structures such as channels, flute marks and groove marks.
